15-20 million years ago, Izu was a group of submarine volcanoes located several hundreds of kilometers south from Honshu. Volcanic ejecta such as volcanic ash and lavas were deposited on ocean floor. The fossil of spiral shell named "Matsuzakiensis", discovered in these sediments and presented to the academy in 2012, is a valuable witness to talk about the ancient tropcal enviroment surrounded by deep sea.
