In Edo Period, Izu Peninsula was famous in the quarrying of building stones. Pumice and ash which erupted from submarine volcanoes formed this natural stones (Izu Ishi) several million years ago. Some mossy abandoned quarries are still there, you can see the evidences of submarine volcanic eruptions.
“Muroiwado” in Matsuzaki town is the abandoned quarry open for tourists.
